Had a tournament yesterday, the first of the season. Didn't really expect to do very well, what with having not fenced all summer, and then only practicing about 10 times before the tournament.

Much to my surprise, I managed to get seeded seventh out of twenty-three coming from the pool rounds. I got a bye the first round of direct eliminations, won the second round, and lost by four touches in the third, managing to keep my overall seventh-place ranking in the tournament.

Rumor had it that medals were awarded to the top eight places, so my team stuck around to let me participate in the medal ceremony. When the ceremony did roll around, the announcer called out, "In seventh place, earning her E06 rating." ...

WHAT?! That was my goal for the entire year. Get rated. (For those who don't know, ratings go, from lowest to highest, E to A. Ratings must be earned by placing well in division tournaments, and must be renewed at least every four years to be kept. I have been unrated before this, never placing high enough to earn my lowest rating.) Apparently, the turnout for the competition was so saturated with rated fencers that USFA rules required the entire tournament to be ranked C-level, meaning that ratings had to be awarded to the top eight places.

My heart nearly stopped. I was moments away from breaking into hysterical tears. I don't remember ever being that happy before.

God, I'm lame. But so incredibly psyched about it.

E-rated fencer, baby!

Now to work on my D...
